BBC to air adaptation of "Kensuke's Kingdom" novel
Prepare for an enchanting adventure as the animated film Kensuke's Kingdom is set to premiere on BBC iPlayer and BBC One on August 3rd, 2025. This captivating tale, based on the beloved children's novel by Michael Morpurgo, is a collaborative effort by some of the most esteemed producers in the industry.
The film is produced by Lupus Films, a London-based film and television studio known for their award-winning family hits such as The Tiger Who Came to Tea, The Snowman and The Snowdog, Ethel and Ernest, Mog's Christmas, We're Going on a Bear Hunt, and The Night Before Christmas in Wonderland. Lupus Films has once again proven their prowess with Kensuke's Kingdom, as the film was hand-painted over a period of two and a half years by 200 artists at the studio.
The story revolves around a young boy named Michael, who finds himself shipwrecked on a remote island and encounters a mysterious Japanese man. The Japanese man in the story retreated to the island after World War Two, and together, they face dangerous invaders that threaten their island paradise.
The screen adaptation of Kensuke's Kingdom was penned by Children's Laureate Frank Cottrell-Boyce, and the film is directed by Neil Boyle and Kirk Hendry. The voice cast includes Sally Hawkins, Cillian Murphy, Raffey Cassidy, Aaron MacGregor, and Ken Watanabe.
Kensuke's Kingdom has already garnered significant recognition, having been nominated in the Best Children's and Film category at this year's BAFTA Film Awards. Additionally, it has won several international film and film music awards, including Best Feature at the British Animation Awards, Grand Prize at the New York International Children's Film Festival, and Best Original Score and Best Animation at the New York Movie Awards.
In France, the children voted Kensuke's Kingdom as their favourite movie of the year at the Cine Jeunes Awards. The film has also received Gold Awards for Animated Film and Original Score at the Hollywood Gold Awards.
