BBC initially terminated "Not Going Out" after three seasons, only to later reconsider their decision
The popular British sitcom, Not Going Out, airs its 101st episode tonight on BBC One at 9 pm, marking a significant milestone in its long-running history. Though it's tantalizingly close to surpassing other beloved comedies like My Family and Birds of a Feather in episode count, it's still far from reaching the record set by Last of the Summer Wine.
Created by Lee Mack, Not Going Out first hit the screens in 2006 and has since become a staple of British comedy. Despite initial cancellation after its third series in 2009, the show was revived due to its popularity and demand from fans, demonstrating its strong ongoing appeal.
The cancellation in 2009 came as a shock to Mack, who admitted he barely went out during the show's production and was unaware of its popularity. However, he felt a breakthrough in series 3 as the show started to enter the public consciousness. Not Going Out was pulling in millions of viewers and had found its footing during this period.
One of the standout episodes from the series is number 5, "Neighbour", where Tim's character takes steroids and knocks out the annoying loud music-playing neighbour. This episode is included in the best episodes list and is a testament to the show's ability to deliver laughs and memorable moments.
Lee Mack, the creator of Not Going Out, has no plans to stop the show. He noted that he realized the impact of Not Going Out when he was out in public and people started mentioning the characters from the show. The strong DVD sales for the third series and a fan petition are believed to have saved the show, further demonstrating its enduring appeal.
As Not Going Out enters its 14th season, it continues to be the longest-running sitcom on air. With its witty humour, relatable characters, and timeless storylines, it's no wonder that the show has captured the hearts of millions of viewers. Tune in tonight on BBC One at 9 pm to catch the latest episode of Not Going Out.
