Bayreuth Expands 30 km/h Zones, Prioritizes Pedestrians in City Center by 2026
Bayreuth is rolling out widespread traffic calming measures, with several pedestrian-sensitive areas already reduced to 30 km/h (20 mph). The city council has plans to expand these zones, with the city center set to follow in 2026.
The city has already implemented 30 km/h zones on Erlanger Straße, Weiherstraße near the kindergarten, and Bahnhofstraße at the station forecourt. Next year, the last major zone, covering the area between Hohenzollernring, Bahnhofstraße, Casselmannstraße, Carl-Schüller-Straße, and Feustelstraße/Nordring, will be established. This zone will introduce the 'priority to the right' rule after necessary road markings and stop lines are removed.
Preparatory work is underway, including the removal of stop lines and other markings. Drivers are urged to strictly observe the posted speed limits for safety. The municipal works department has installed signage on nearly all affected streets. A new 30 km/h zone in the city center, bounded by Carl-Schüller-Straße, Bürgerreuther Straße, Feustelstraße, and Gutenbergstraße, is set to be introduced shortly. In this zone, the 'priority to the right' rule will apply at most intersections, except for the bus route along Friedrich-von-Schiller-Straße. Drivers are advised to exercise caution during the initial adjustment period.
Bayreuth's City Council Transportation Committee resolved to implement these widespread traffic calming measures last year. With the expansion of 30 km/h zones and the introduction of the 'priority to the right' rule, the city aims to enhance pedestrian safety and create a more peaceful urban environment.
