Tragic Halt in Recovery of "Bayesian" Yacht: Diver's Demise

Bayesian's recuperation has been put on permanent hold.

The "unsinkable" yacht "Bayesian" met its match in a storm last summer, and now, its recovery has hit a snag. A diver's untimely death during operations has put the recovery on hold indefinitely.

TMC Marine, spearheading the operation, confirmed the temporary halt due to ongoing investigations into the diver's death. The unfortunate incident occurred last Friday, leaving the 39-year-old Dutch diver unconscious, and later, lifeless.

Autopsy results are pending, with initial theories suggesting the diver may have suffered a seizure or a malfunctioning oxygen tank. Reports from ANSA, however, indicate that the diver might have been struck by a metal object while working with a cutting torch.

Struggling to Rise from the Depths

The yacht has been resting beneath the Mediterranean waters, about 50 meters deep, approximately a kilometer from the shore. The recovery process is an intricate, costly endeavor, with the estimated costs reaching millions of euros.

Was There More to the Sinking than Meets the Eye?

The 56-meter, 473-tonne yacht sank off the coast of Porticello during a brief 15-minute storm in August 2023. Among the victims were British software billionaire Mike Lynch, his 18-year-old daughter, two couples, and the ship's cook. Speculations regarding the cause of the sinking persist, even implicating international intelligence agencies.

Investigations are currently underway against the captain and two other crew members, accused of ignoring storm warnings and prioritizing their own survival.
