BBL Variant: Bypassing the Controversy - MBC's Protest Against Bayern Defeat Turned Down
Bayern's BBL triumph remains valid despite MBC-Protest rejection - Bayern's win in the BBL stands, as MBC's protests have been dismissed
Hey there, sports enthusiasts! The Basketball Bundesliga (BBL) has given FC Bayern Munich the green light to keep their victory against Syntainics MBC, after dismissing the latter's request to overturn the 88:90 defeat. The BBL's head of games, Dirk Horstmann, dropped the bombshell in a statement, stating that the game was deemed "invalid" and the protest wasn't made clearly.
Weißenfels-based MBC had fought tooth and nail, appealing the loss and requesting that Bayern's final three-pointer not be counted towards the score. Unfortunately, their efforts were in vain as Horstmann pointed out the forgetful submission of the protest. Apparently, MBC's managing director, Martin Geissler, attempted to contact the commissioner and referees right after the game, but alas, it wasn't enough.
Subsequently, MBC decided not to push the issue any further. In a statement, the club emphasized, "The undivided attention of the club, team, and entourage should be focused on the remaining three main round games.” With rankings at 10th, MBC still has hope to make it to the playoff quarterfinals.
So, what transpired during the heated game? Bayern had possession with 1.7 seconds left, and during a chaotic inbound pass, MBC player Ivan Tkachenko visibly touched the ball. But here's the twist: the clock wasn't started yet. Shabazz Napier then took his chance and let loose a three-pointer. After a close watch, referee Anne Panther decided that Tkachenko's touch didn't significantly alter play, which allowed Napier's game-winning shot to count. Geissler wasn't pleased and immediately announced a protest. However, the BBL remained unmoved, claiming the controversial call was a non-reviewable factual judgment.
