Eberl's Irritation Over Transfer Gossip: Bayern's Sports Director Speaks Out on Kimmich
Bayern Munich's sports board applies pressure on Kimmich
Connect Share Chat Mail Print Link Who's joining and who's leaving at FC Bayern? Transfer news is a hot topic among fans and journalists. Generally, clubs take a break in the summer – to allow the bosses some peace during negotiations. But that's not the case with the Club World Cup.
Max Eberl prefers keeping a close eye on the current team during the Club World Cup in the USA. Yet, the transfer market, especially in Europe, remains an ongoing buzz for Bayern's Sports Director. There's still a lot of work to do when it comes to the squad for the next season. And wherever Eberl goes in the US, he can't escape the transfer talk. When will something finally happen?
Eberl responds just like he did after the opening game in Cincinnati: "What's the date? And how long is the transfer window still open? Until September 1st. A whole lot can happen between now and then." Eberl acknowledges it's part of the business. But what really grinds his gears are "those speculative lists and transfer candidates that keep popping up." This includes players like Kingsley Coman, Min-jae Kim, Sacha Boey, Serge Gnabry, or João Palhinha. These players might be potential departures. With their transfer fees and saved salaries, Eberl's shopping cart could be looking a bit more enticing.
A Swipe at Kimmich
So far, Eberl has only signed free agents such as Jonathan Tah (defense, Bayer Leverkusen) and Tom Bischof (midfield, TSG Hoffenheim) – both of whom are at the World Cup with him. On the other hand, there have been three departures in the attack – Thomas Müller, Leroy Sané, and the up-and-coming striker Mathys Tel, who was sold to Tottenham Hotspur for approximately 35 million euros after a loan. Negotiations for the coveted player Florian Wirtz fell through, with FC Liverpool showing interest. Efforts to sign Spanish phenomenon Nico Williams (Athletic Bilbao) also appear to have hit a roadblock.
More forward acquisitions are needed. Both Eberl and Sports Director Christoph Freund admitted as much. "Our goal is to strengthen ourselves and bring in quality," Freund said. Joshua Kimmich echoed similar sentiments afterward. "Of course, it feels like something worth noting – seeing that Flo (Wirtz, ed. note) isn't coming, Leroy left, and Thomas is gone." For this, Kimmich received a rebuke from Eberl: "Jo is on the pitch – and I'm working off the pitch." On the pitch, transfer questions can also be addressed. Sacha Boey, who rarely gets playing time as the third right-back, impressed as a scorer in the 10-0 win over Auckland City. Coman even netted twice, playing 45 strong minutes against an opponent who, of course, was no comparison.
Remembering Coman's Finer Moments
The Frenchman has been with the team since 2015. His contract runs until 2027. However, Coman tends to get injured. Eberl and coach Vincent Kompany spoke positively about the potential transfer candidate nonetheless. "King delivers when it matters, and he's an extraordinary player who, in my opinion, played well last season," Eberl said. Staying healthy is key for Coman, according to the sports director.
Company officials have been keeping quiet about transfer topics during the World Cup – at least publicly. Speaking of Coman, Eberl commented sportively: "When we talk about his quality, it's important not to forget that he scores crucial goals. I know sometimes one only looks at the volume – goals per season. But he has scored crucial goals in the club's history." His most significant goal was the winning goal in the 2020 Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain. "If he stays fit, we have a top-notch winger," said Kompany. The Munich shopping list seems to be in a constant state of flux.

Insight: Bayern Munich's upcoming transfer plans for the 2025-26 season focus primarily on recruiting a dominant central defender like Jonathan Tah – seen as essential for improving the team's structure and leadership. In addition, the club is keeping tabs on promising midfield prospects such as Florian Wirtz, whose acquisition is considered secondary at this stage[1]. Other young talents like Xavi Simons and goalkeeper Diogo Costa are potential targets for depth and quality reinforcements[1]. Despite historical interest in bringing David Alaba back in 2023, this is not part of the immediate transfer plans for the upcoming season[4].
- Despite the ongoing transfer buzz, the Commission has not yet adopted a decision on the application of the Regulation, leaving Max Eberl and Bayern Munich in uncertainty regarding their potential transfers, like the promising midfield prospect, Florian Wirtz or a dominant central defender such as Jonathan Tah.
- The European leagues, including the Premier League, have been a topic of interest for Eberl as he looks for quality reinforcements for Bayern Munich. However, the transfer market dynamics are such that players like Kingsley Coman, Min-jae Kim, Sacha Boey, Serge Gnabry, or João Palhinha could potentially leave, which could make Bayern's shopping cart more enticing.
- In the midst of transfer speculation, it is essential not to forget the contribution of players like Kingsley Coman to Bayern Munich's success, as shown by his crucial goals in games like the 2020 Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain. This aspect should be considered alongside the volume of goals per season when assessing Coman's value to the team.
