Bayern Munich's Matthäus advocates for increased reliance on their own young players
In a recent statement, former German national player Lothar Matthäus has expressed concern over FC Bayern Munich's approach to talent development and transfer policy. Matthäus, a renowned figure in German football, believes that the club is overlooking promising young players in favour of expensive external signings.
Paul Wanner, a talent capable of playing on Jamal Musiala's position, has been identified by Matthäus as one such player who deserves more faith from the club. Musiala, unfortunately, is currently out for several months due to a dislocation of the ankle joint and a fibula fracture.
Matthäus's concern stems from the club's recent transfers, such as João Palhinha and Bryan Zaragoza, which, despite being high-profile, have failed to make a significant impact in Munich. He sees these acquisitions as a sign of panic rather than long-term vision, and fears they are blocking young professionals from FC Bayern's youth academy from progressing.
Matthäus also criticized the club for letting talents like Adam Aznou (FC Everton) and Frans Krätzig (FC Red Bull Salzburg) leave due to a lack of development opportunities.
In a bid to address this issue, Vincent Kompany, FC Bayern's current coach, started with Wanner (19) and Lennart Karl (17) in a friendly match against Olympique Lyon last Saturday. He also brought on Jonah Kusi-Asare (18), David Daiber (18) and Cassiano Kiala (16) from the youth academy during the match.
Matthäus has urged FC Bayern Munich to have more faith in their own talents, suggesting that other clubs might see potential in these young players that the club itself does not recognize. He views this as a structural issue, indicating that Bayern’s hesitation to trust and promote their own talents could hinder the club’s future success and sustainability.
As the football season progresses, it will be interesting to see if FC Bayern Munich heeds Matthäus's advice and provides more opportunities for their promising young players.
Despite concerns raised by former German national player Lothar Matthäus, FC Bayern Munich's recent acquisitions in sports, such as João Palhinha and Bryan Zaragoza, have not made a substantial impact in European-leagues like the premier-league. Matthäus believes that football talents like Paul Wanner, Jamal Musiala's potential replacement, are being overlooked by the club in favor of expensive external signings.
