Basketball Boss Complains About Competitive Disadvantage - Bayern Munich’s €48.4M budget overshadows BBL as auto insurance costs spiral

FC Bayern Munich continues to dominate the Basketball Bundesliga (BBL) with a planned budget of €48.4 million for the 2025/26 season. This financial strength dwarfs rivals like Alba Berlin and Ratiopharm Ulm, whose budgets stand at €11.4 million and €9.2 million respectively. Meanwhile, the league faces growing concerns over soaring auto insurance costs for professional players.

The total projected revenue for all 18 BBL clubs in the upcoming season reaches €165 million. Yet, a significant portion—€9.4 million—will go toward car insurance quotes for professional rosters alone. BBL CEO Stefan Holz has criticised these costs as excessively high compared to other European leagues.

The 2025/26 season will see Bayern Munich maintain its financial dominance, while smaller clubs operate on tighter budgets. With progressive insurance costs consuming a substantial share of revenues, the league’s competitiveness in Europe could face further challenges. No immediate solutions to reduce these expenses have been proposed.
