FC Bayern entered the Club World Cup 2025 in dominance, clinching a 2:1 victory over Boca Juniors after a nail-biting performance in Miami. The victory sends them forward to the round of 16, with possible opponents including Chelsea, Flamengo, or Tunis.
With a thumping 10:0 victory over Auckland in their opening match, Bayern seemed unstoppable. However, this game proved to be a more precarious victory, leaving fans on edge.
Harry Kane netted the first goal for Bayern in the 18th minute, putting them ahead firmly. Boca leveled the score through Miguel Merentiel in the heated atmosphere of the 66th minute, but Michael Olise struck back just eight minutes later. Olise's victory goal caused a stir when he made a "shush" gesture in front of the passionate Argentinian fans. In a post-game interview, a "very satisfied" Kane acknowledged the team's strong performance, stating, "We should have been further ahead in the first half. It's great that I scored, but what matters most is reaching the round of 16."
Musiala Injured Again
The victory came at a cost as substitute Jamal Musiala had to be substituted out due to injury. The young star, who recently returned from a long-term injury before the World Cup, was forced to leave the game just before the final whistle. Despite initial concerns, further assessments confirmed that the injury is not serious, and Musiala returned to training on Sunday. Fans can breathe a sigh of relief as he is expected to be fit for Bayern's upcoming match against Benfica and will not miss any games due to this setback.
Before the match, Kane had warned the team to beware of Boca's tactics: "We have to prepare for a dangerous game. They'll use all the tricks they have to unsettle us." Tactical changes saw Serge Gnabry, Leon Goretzka, and Konrad Laimer come in for Sacha Boey, Aleksandar Pavlovic, and Thomas Müller, respectively.
The game started with Bayern dominating possession as expected. An early goal celebration in the 8th minute was called off following a video review due to a foul, but Bayern captured the lead with Kane's goal later on. Despite numerous chances to extend the lead, Kane, Kingsley Coman, and Olise all missed opportunities to score.
Boca Makes a Comeback
Following the break, Bayern stayed on top. However, Boca made a resurgence, Merentiel equalizing to rattle the Bayern team. For the first time in the game, there were murmurs in the stands as Boca pushed harder. The substitutions of Musiala and Leroy Sané initially seemed to have no impact, but Olise's late goal brought back order, and the stadium erupted in celebration.
With the win secured and Musiala resting for the team's recuperation, Bayern aims to continue their dominance in the next match against Benfica.
