Bayern Munich secures long-term contract with German defender Tah, extending his stay until 2029.
Bayern Munich has secured the services of defender Jonathan Tah, who has signed a four-year deal that will keep him at the club until 2029. The 29-year-old joins from Bayer Leverkusen, where he spent a decade and was the club's longest-serving outfield player.
Tah expressed his delight at joining Bayern, stating, "I'm very happy to be at Bayern. I want to take on responsibility here and work hard every day so that we're successful as a team and win lots of trophies together."
Leaving Leverkusen, Tah had announced that he would not be extending his contract beyond 2025, and in May, he was given a big farewell at his last home game. Bayern had initially been linked with signing Tah in the summer of 2024 with one year remaining on his contract, but a deal was not struck due to Leverkusen's high asking price.
With Eric Dier's departure for Monaco, Bayern needed to sign a center-back, and Tah's arrival addresses that need. Sporting director Christoph Freund described Tah as a player with international experience and quality, who would make a good and important addition to the team with his technical skills and leadership.
Tah, born in Hamburg, has played 35 games for the German national team since making his debut in 2016. He has established himself as a mainstay in the Germany defense, starting all but one of the international games for which he was available since September 2023. Tah is a member of Julian Nagelsmann's squad to play in the Nations League finals next month.
Bayern had also been interested in Tah's club teammate Florian Wirtz, but he now appears likely to move to Liverpool, with Leverkusen announcing "concrete interest" from the Premier League winners this week.
Tah's arrival at Bayern Munich, hailing from Germany, reinforces their roster for the upcoming international sports season, particularly in football. With European leagues on the horizon, Tah's extensive experience and proven leadership in the German national team will undoubtedly be an asset in Bayern's quest for trophies.
