Orlando (dpa) - Bayern Munich, self-proclaimed title contenders, find themselves in a thrilling, yet perilous situation at the start of the knockout phase in the Club World Cup. The crucial circumstance is exemplified by experienced tournament participant, Thomas Müller, who has hinted at this potentially being his final game in Bayern Munich's jersey, saying, "This tournament is picking up speed. A knockout game is always a game with fire – you're always packing bags."
With four World Cup and four European Championship appearances under his belt, Müller, along with goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, experienced the pinnacle of victory in the Maracanã Stadium, Rio, during the 2014 World Cup final, defeating Argentina 1:0 in extra time.
Fast forward eleven years, it's Sunday (22:00 CET/Sat.1 and DAZN) in Miami, where Bayern legends Müller and Neuer face a Brazilian team in a World Cup tournament. It promises to be a real challenge – one that may also lead to a potential quarter-final against Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain or Inter Miami, featuring the now 38-year-old Lionel Messi.
In the four Brazilian teams participating – Flamengo, Fluminense, and Botafogo from Rio, as well as Palmeiras from São Paulo – Flamengo is currently regarded as the strongest. "Flamengo is currently the best Brazilian team," says Bayern’s sporting director, Christoph Freund, "They also beat Chelsea." By a score of 3:1.
With a squad strengthened by the addition of midfield ace Jorginho, formerly of FC Arsenal, Bayern will have their work cut out for them when they face the South American powerhouse. Vincent Kompany, head coach, is looking forward to the "highlight game," but also acknowledges the inherent danger. Bayern Munich arrived in the USA with dreams of winning the title and pocketing a sizable sum. However, the real big million-dollar prizes are now at stake, and an early exit in the round of 16 would be a major setback.
Given the absence of key players such as Buchmann (shoulder), Davies (knee), Dier (transfer), Ito (metatarsal fracture), and Kim (Achilles injury), Vincent Kompany has a challenging task ahead of him in putting together a first tournament team and finishing the offensive puzzle. Thomas Müller, Michael Olise, Kingsley Coman, and Harry Kane could potentially lead the attack for Bayern Munich, while Jorginho, Gerson, Giorgian De Arrascaeta, and Luiz Araújo may pose a formidable threat on the Brazilian side.
As both sides gear up for the contest, Bayern fans can expect passionate play from the South American teams, with Filipe Luís, Flamengo’s coach, describing the German team as a “sporting giant.” Despite the Brazilian fans being likely to dominate the atmosphere at the Hard Rock Stadium, Thomas Müller remains unphased, commenting, "We wish for more football festivals like this." Let the games begin!
Bayern Munich's encounter with Flamengo in the Club World Cup promises to be a battle between two powerhouses, as both teams strive for victory in the football arena. Thomas Müller and his fellow Bayern legend, Manuel Neuer, will face a Brazilian team in a World Cup tournament, with Flamengo being considered the strongest among the four participating Brazilian teams.
