Bayern Munich makes more roster changes: Palhinha is the initial departure
João Palhinha Moves to Tottenham Hotspur on Loan
João Palhinha, the Portuguese midfielder, is set to spend the 2025/26 season on loan at Tottenham Hotspur from Bayern Munich. The deal, which includes an option to buy, comes as a result of Palhinha's limited playing time at Bayern last season.
The 30-year-old midfielder joined Bayern from Fulham in the summer of 2024, but did not get the expected playing time under head coach Vincent Kompany. Injuries and the coach's preferences limited Palhinha to only 24 competitive appearances, with just nine starts.
Tottenham, who are aiming to strengthen their midfield ahead of a return to the Champions League, see Palhinha as a strong defensive midfield option, similar to their existing players. The move to Spurs offers Palhinha the opportunity for more regular football and to prove himself again in the Premier League, where he previously gained experience with Fulham.
Max Eberl, sports director of FC Bayern Munich, stated that this move is the best solution for all parties. The transfer was announced on Sunday evening, and Bayern wished Palhinha all the best for the upcoming season.
Several other players have also left Bayern this summer, including Thomas Müller, Leroy Sané, Eric Dier, Bryan Zaragoza, Daniel Peretz, Mathys Tel, and Adam Aznou. On the other hand, Jonathan Tah and Tom Bischof have joined Bayern as free transfers.
Meanwhile, Paul Wanner, who returned from Heidenheim, is expected to get a chance after Jamal Musiala's serious injury. Liverpool also signed Luis Díaz for up to 75 million euros in transfer fee.
With Tottenham Hotspur, Palhinha can potentially play in the Champions League and spend a whole season at the top international level. The loan deal gives both parties a chance to assess Palhinha's suitability before deciding on a permanent transfer.
Community aid programs could benefit from Palhinha's community work, considering his passion for giving back, a trait he displayed during his time at Fulham. Vocational training centers in Portugal might also consider inviting Palhinha for a visit or collaboration, given his football career experiences and the upcoming European leagues, especially the Premier League, where he's set to compete with Tottenham Hotspur.
