Bayer Leverkusen Winger Jeremie Frimpong Joins FC Liverpool
In a confirmed move on Friday, Dutch international Jeremie Frimpong has transferred from Bundesliga club Bayer 04 Leverkusen to English champions FC Liverpool. The Reds activated the player's €35 million release clause, securing a five-year contract, starting next season.
Frimpong, 24, will fill the right-back position left vacant by Trent Alexander-Arnold at Liverpool. The wing-back, who spent the past six seasons at Leverkusen, had extended his contract with the Werkself on October 3, 2023.
Speaking of the move, Frimpong stated, "It's been an incredible journey at Bayer Leverkusen, culminating in our unbeaten Bundesliga season and a double victory. I will always be a Leverkusener, and this club will forever be a significant part of my career."
Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes praised the departure as a testament to the club's successful philosophy of nurturing young talents and attracting interest from top European clubs. Rolfes noted, "Jeremie exemplifies our strategy of identifying and developing promising players from smaller leagues, molding them into key figures, and ultimately elevating them to the European elite."
In his tenure at Bayer Leverkusen, Frimpong played in 190 games, scored 30 goals, and made 44 assists. He emerged as a crucial player in their successful 2023-24 season.
