Two Premier League Vets Compete for Bayer Leverkusen Managerial Role

Bayer Leverkusen is on the hunt for a new manager as Xabi Alonso departs to Madrid at season's end. The race is heating up between two ex-Premier League stars, Erik ten Hag and Cesc Fabregas.

Alonso, who's been linked to a return to Spain, has led the German club to impressive heights with an unbeaten domestic double last season, apart from a single Europa League final loss. Yet, he's confirmed his departure, setting the stage for a new coach to take the reins.

Ten Hag, who was let go by Manchester United in October, has emerged as a strong candidate. Despite salary demands, his lack of a current job gives Leverkusen a cost advantage compared to Fabregas. The Spanish midfield legend, now managing Italian side Como, has led them to an impressive 10th in their debut season following promotion.

Fabregas enjoys a contract till 2028 but could be pried away for a reported £10million fee. Leverkusen's leadership sees Fabregas as their preferred choice due to his stellar playing career and promising start in management, positioning him as the favorite to continue their progressive football philosophy with a fresh perspective.

Xavi Hernández, another name on the shortlist, is less favored compared to Fabregas and ten Hag[1][3]. Regardless, the decision will alter the club's trajectory as they search for a worthy successor to Alonso.

As Leverkusen's manager, Alonso amassed an impressive 88 wins from 138 games – a win rate of more than 64%. In addition to being Bundesliga's coach of the season last year and receiving 'Best Coach of the Year' at Globe Soccer in 2024, Alonso's departure signals the beginning of a new era for the German club[4].
