Heated Negotiations: Liverpool's Pursuit of Florian Wirtz Hits a Roadblock

Bayer has turned down Liverpool's subsequent bid for Wirtz. - Bayer has turned down a second proposal from Liverpool regarding the transfer of Wirtz.

Looks like the battle for national star Florian Wirtz is heating up! In a latest twist, Bayer Leverkusen has supposedly knocked back Liverpool FC's second offer. The second proposal, according to German sports magazine "Kicker", amounted to a fixed sum of €130 million (around $144 million) plus an additional €12 million (about $13.2 million) in bonuses.

Previously, Liverpool had reportedly thrown a bid of €115 million (approximately $128.2 million) plus additional payments worth €15 million (around $16.4 million) on the table. But it appears the Bayer brass are aiming higher, with a previously stated minimum amount of €150 million (about $168.8 million) from managing director Fernando Carro still on their wishlist[1].

What will close the deal?

To bridge the current gap of at least €20 million (around $22.4 million), two possibilities are being considered: prolonged negotiation rounds or the inclusion of another player in the colossal deal.

According to recent reports, Leverkusen has displayed interest in a Liverpool player[2]. Offensive player Harvey Elliott is believed to be a part of the internal discussions. The pay-TV channel Sky had previously linked English champions elect 2024, Liverpool, with both Elliott and his teammate Jarell Quansah[3].

Why Wirtz is such a pricey asset

The 22-year-old Wirtz seems set on leaving Leverkusen for Anfield. And he also turned down the strongly interested German record champions, Bayern Munich[1].

Wirtz's contract with Bayer runs until June 2027, and there's no release clause in the agreement, making the transfer fee open to negotiation[3]. Manchester City is reportedly out of the picture for Wirtz due to the costly overall package[3].
