Lake Constance excluded from plans for future water supply - Bavaria's New Water Strategy: Securing Millions' Supply Amid Climate Change
Bavaria is revamping its long-distance water infrastructure strategy to withstand climate change impacts. The new plans, aiming to secure water supply for millions, consider various sources and methods.
Initially, Lake Constance was proposed as a source for a 'water bridge' system. However, this option has been discarded. Now, water sourcing from the Nýrsko Dam in the Czech Republic is under serious consideration. This move could benefit around 2.4 million people in northern Bavaria, including those currently served by the existing system.
In addition, alternative measures are being explored. These include extracting groundwater from the Lech river confluence area and constructing a third reservoir within Bavaria. These approaches aim to extend water security to an additional 2.4 million people.
Bavaria is actively rethinking its water supply strategy due to climate change impacts. By considering a combination of water sourcing options, including the Nýrsko Dam in the Czech Republic, groundwater extraction, and reservoir construction, the state aims to future-proof its long-distance water infrastructure and secure supply for about 4.8 million people.
