Gaudiwurmer in the Cities - Carnival Reaches its Climax - Bavaria's grand Carnival parades return with dazzling processions and historic traditions
Bavaria is alive with colour and music as its grand Carnival parades take over the streets. Today's celebrations feature processions in Würzburg, Coburg, Nuremberg, and Munich, drawing jubilant crowds in elaborate costumes. Hundreds of thousands of revelers are expected to line the routes, marking one of the region's most vibrant traditions.
Würzburg's parade, now in its 70th year, will see 133 groups march through the city. Organisers anticipate between 70,000 and 100,000 spectators. The event reflects Franconian customs, including historic carnival newspapers—verse-filled publications documenting local happenings—and the influence of southern carnival balls.
Last year, some cities scaled back their festivities. Munich and Aschaffenburg canceled their parades after a deadly knife attack in the state capital. Nuremberg's Children's Carnival parade was also called off due to online threats from Islamist extremists.
This year, Nuremberg's main parade returns with its signature chant, 'Nämberch Ahaaaaaa!'. Revelers will toss Kamelle, traditional Carnival sweets, into the crowd. The city's Children's Carnival parade, usually held on Rose Monday, invites local groups to join the fun once again.
The parades bring back full-scale celebrations after last year's disruptions. Cities across Bavaria have prepared months for today's events, blending long-standing traditions with renewed energy. The festivities will continue well into the evening, filling streets with music, laughter, and confetti.
