Catholic Bishops Convene - Funding for Universities - Bavaria's Bishops to Finalize €42M Interdiocesan Fund Budget for 2026

Bavaria's bishops are gathering in Munich for their autumn plenary assembly. Among the key topics on their agenda is the finalization of the 2026 budget for the Bavarian Interdiocesan Fund, which supports over 60 institutions internationally. The fund, entirely financed by contributions from Bavaria's dioceses, had a budget of nearly €42 million in 2023, with roughly two-thirds allocated to universities and colleges.

The Interdiocesan Fund is supported by contributions from the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising, the Diocese of Augsburg, the Diocese of Passau, the Diocese of Regensburg, and the Diocese of Bamberg. These dioceses draw on church tax revenues to fund the Interdiocesan Fund. The bishops, led by Cardinal Reinhard Marx, will also discuss Catholic universities and youth ministry during their assembly.

The Freising Bishops’ Conference, representing Bavaria’s seven archdioceses and dioceses, including the Diocese of Speyer, will play a crucial role in shaping the future of these international initiatives.

With the 2026 budget for the Bavarian Interdiocesan Fund set to be finalized, the bishops' assembly in Munich aims to secure the future of numerous institutions internationally. The fund's significant investment in education, with two-thirds of its budget allocated to universities and colleges, underscores the Catholic Church's commitment to supporting academic pursuits internationally in Bavaria.
