Bayern's Long-Term Aim: Nübel's Ambition
Bavarian politician Nübel declares aggressive campaign call: "Battle for it".
Alexander Nübel, the current loanee of VfB Stuttgart, has made his ambitions clear: he desires to guard the goal of German football titans, Bayern Munich, for the long haul. "If I'm given a shot to be Bayern's number one, I'll damned well fight for it," he shared with "Die Welt am Sonntag."
Loaned to Bundesliga rivals until 2026, Nübel is contracted with Bayern until 2030. Previously poised to be the successor to Manuel Neuer (38), the introduction of Jonas Urbig (21) during the winter break has cast doubt on his future at Munich.
Nübel acknowledged the risky move that caused VfB Stuttgart's setback, stating, "It was obvious that something would happen when Daniel Peretz got injured. But Bayern could've picked anyone they wanted or snagged someone even better—they are Bayern, after all."
While Neuer's retirement remains uncertain, Nübel expressed his hopes, "If Manuel decides to hang up his gloves one of these days, I surely hope to take up the mantle at Bayern." Displaying savvy composure, he added, "I'm eager for that moment, but I'm also pretty chill about it."
First, though, there's the matter of his place in the national team's goal. With Marc-André ter Stegen still out due to a knee injury, discussions on the permanent number one between Oliver Baumann (34) and Nübel are in motion.
Unfazed by the competition, Nübel remains focused, "I'm not actively chasing that right now." Yet, he emphasized, "I'm just stoked to have made my national team debut. That was an incredible honor—something I always dreamed about as a kid."
Regarding his international career, Nübel aims to accumulate as many appearances as possible, "I'm a football professional, after all. But we've got some top-notch goalkeepers in Germany."
