Saying Farewell to Egon Coordes: A Legendary Figure in Bundesliga History
Bavarian Four-Time Champion, Egon Coordes, Has Passed Away.
Memmingen (dpa) - The football world is mourning the loss of Egon Coordes, a former Bundesliga coach and player who passed away on Tuesday at the age of 80. His family confirmed the news to the German Press Agency, with the "Kicker" being the first to report it.
Coordinates was best known as an assistant coach for FC Bayern Munich, working alongside legends like Udo Lattek, Jupp Heynckes, and Giovanni Trapattoni. Together, they won four German championships in 1985, 1986, 1989, and 1990. In 1997, Bayern brought Coordes back as Trapattoni's assistant, and he even worked under Heynckes again during the 2011-2012 season, also coaching the Bayern basketball team briefly afterward.
FC Bayern club president Herbert Hainer reminisced about Coordes' impact on the team, saying, "Egon Coordes was never in the limelight but had a great influence and contributed to the successes in the 90s. He will always have a special place in our memories at FC Bayern."
Debut as Head Coach: A Mixed Bag
Despite being a valuable assistant coach, Coordes' time as a head coach in the first and second divisions was less successful. He had to leave VfB Stuttgart, Hamburger SV, and Hannover 96 prematurely on each occasion. Beyond that, he coached in various countries, including Austria, Switzerland, the Gulf region, and briefly in Iran in 1999.
As a football professional, Coordes played 157 Bundesliga games for Werder Bremen and VfB Stuttgart. His coaching career began in Bremerhaven—his hometown—before he moved to Munich.
The Unsung Hero Behind Bayern's Success
Though Coordes struggled as a head coach, his legacy at Bayern is marked by his role behind the scenes. He was integral to Bayern's success, both as a fitness specialist and conditioning coach. His contributions helped ensure the team was in peak physical shape, a significant factor in their numerous Bundesliga titles.
Egon Coordes might have stayed out of the limelight, but his impact was undeniable. His tireless work and dedication to Bayern have etched his name in the annals of Bundesliga history. His passing leaves a void that will be difficult to fill.
