Bavarian Book Prize 2025: All-Female Nominees Vie for €10,000 Prize

For the first time, all nominees are women. They'll compete for the top prize and a prestigious award at the Munich ceremony.

Winner of the Bavarian Book Prize to be crowned - Bavarian Book Prize 2025: All-Female Nominees Vie for €10,000 Prize

The Bavarian Book Prize is set to take place in Munich on Tuesday evening, with a diverse range of nominees in both fiction and nonfiction categories. All nominees this year are women, each vying for the €10,000 prize and a Nymphenburg porcelain figurine.

In the fiction category, Annette Pehnt is nominated for her book 'Climbing a Volcano', while Dagmar Leupold is recognised for 'Birthmarks'. Dorothee Elmiger's 'The Dutchwomen' also makes the list. In nonfiction, Martina Heßler is nominated for 'Sisyphus in the Engine Room', Heike Geißler for 'Desperations', and Verena Lueken for 'Old Women'.

The ceremony, starting at 8:00 PM, will not only announce the winners of the Bavarian Book Prize but also the recipient of the Bayern 2 Audience Prize. Adding to the glamour, entertainer and author Hape Kerkeling will receive the Bavarian Prime Minister’s Honorary Award. Before the winners are announced, the jury will engage in a live debate with the nominees present.

The Bavarian Book Prize promises an exciting evening, celebrating the best in German literature. With a prestigious panel of judges and a diverse range of nominees, the event is set to honour the finest works in both fiction and nonfiction categories.
