Keeping A Tight Rein on Migration Policies in Bavaria: Alexander Dobrindt's Border Crackdown
- Bavaria supports Dobrindt's border surveillance measures
Gear up for a stricter immigration policy in Bavaria, as the region stands firm behind its party colleague, Alexander Dobrindt, and his border control measures that aim to stamp out illegal immigration. Bavarian Interior Minister, Joachim Herrmann, has backed Dobrindt, declaring an end to the "waive through" policy.
"The days of letting everyone in are over," stated Herrmann in Munich, affirming Dobrindt's mission to vigorously combat irregular migration. German Chancellor and CSU leader Markus Söder has already expressed approval of Dobrindt's tough stance, lending additional support.
Bavaria's border police will boost their own security measures and intensify border controls. Herrmann emphasized that strengthened border control will send a clear message to the rest of the world, motivating other countries to take more responsibility and reduce illegal entries. As it stands, the EU's external borders remain largely unprotected, with hotspots like the "Balkan route" still struggling with effective security. Moreover, countries like Italy resist taking back previously registered asylum seekers, making it challenging to manage immigration.
Since October 2023, Bavaria's border police have been assisting the Federal Police at five border crossings, including Neuhaus am Inn and Selb. Now, seven additional crossings, including Eschlkam, Lindau-Ziegelhaus, Oberaudorf, and Burghausen, will be fortified as well. Additionally, reserve police forces will be deployed to bolster these efforts.
Although federal authorities are primarily responsible for border control, Bavaria's border police conduct independent checks at borders with Austria and the Czech Republic, provided the Federal Police requests or agrees to it. They also carry out random checks up to 30 kilometers inside the country, as well as on transit roads and international traffic facilities. Any detected illegal entries are passed on to the Federal Police for further action.
The extension of temporary border controls at all German land borders until at least September 15, requested by the Federal Ministry of the Interior, has been complied with by the Bavarian authorities. With the demand for further reinforcement of the border controls, the Federal Police has requested assistance from local border police forces, a commitment Herrmann has unequivocally confirmed.

In the upcoming German government, led by Friedrich Merz, stricter border controls will be enforced, including tighter identity checks at borders, scheduled for implementation on May 6, 2025 [1][2]. The asylum policy will focus on requiring asylum applications at the first point of entry into the EU, with undocumented asylum seekers rejected at the borders [1]. Alexander Dobrindt, appointed the Interior Minister, shares these conservative views, fortifying the coalition's commitment to stricter migration policies [2].
