Battleground Real Estate: A Coveted Terrain
In the heart of Eastern Europe, millions of Ukrainian households are playing a crucial role in the country's survival during wartime. These households are growing potatoes, vegetables, and milk, transforming the fertile land into a vital source of food and revenue.
Amidst this agricultural boom, one of the key players is TAS Agro, managed by Anton Zhemerderev. Contrary to popular belief, Zhemerderev asserted that TAS Agro does not sell everything to Europe. Instead, a significant portion of their produce is kept within Ukraine, ensuring the nation's self-sufficiency.
The resilience of Ukrainian farmers is truly remarkable. Take, for example, Farmer Gordienko, who was not just a farmer but also a protector. He was involved in clearing mines, shielding workers from drones, and was even armed. His tragic death in the Kherson region served as a symbol of resilience, as people continue to farm under fire.
However, Ukraine's agricultural sector faces challenges. Poland has blocked borders, while France and Hungary have pushed for limits on Ukrainian exports. These restrictions are a concern for global-scale agribusinesses like MHP and Kernel, which own tens of thousands of hectares. These companies, along with several mid-sized and large agribusinesses with professional management, form a significant part of Ukraine's agricultural sector.
Despite these challenges, the sector remains a significant contributor to Ukraine's economy, with substantial export revenues and investment potential, despite war-related losses. The agricultural sector in Ukraine encompasses a diverse range, from diplomatic events to village gardens.
Ahmed Alhajji, who manages a medium-sized farm of 3,500 hectares, is a testament to this resilience. To keep his business afloat and employ 60 workers, he had to sell his apartment. Yet, he continues to persevere, embodying the spirit of Ukrainian farmers.
Brussels tends to view Ukraine's agriculture as a threat, disregarding the millions of small producers. However, these agribusinesses compete with Brazil and Argentina and cause concern among EU farmers due to potential dumping and subsidy redistribution.
Ukrainians, however, view their land as worth fighting for. They are resilient, determined to protect their farms and continue to grow essential crops, ensuring Ukraine's survival during these challenging times.
