Nicolas Cage, the 61-year-old Hollywood icon, dives headfirst into the world of wave-riding in his latest flick, "The Surfer." Portraying a businessman yearning to return to his Australian roots, Cage's character sets his sights on reclaiming the beach house of his youth and cruising into eternal sunsets with his son. But the ocean isn't as welcoming as he'd hope.

The man behind National Treasure can't surf for squat: "Lorcan and I talked a ton about it," Cage admitted to "Entertainment Weekly" regarding discussions with director Lorcan Finnegan. By film's end, he fancied seizing the surfboard like a pro. Alas, dream shattered, the actor adores the film's finale and wouldn't dare alter a frame. However, he confesses to harboring a desire to mimic the epic surf scene from 1979's "Big Wednesday."

Time and nature conspired against Cage. "I wanted to tackle that shot, but I didn't have time to hone my skills sufficiently," he lamented. Mother Nature raged in the background, spawning troublesome weather conditions and, in an unsettling twist, shark sightings.

Brushing with Death on the Waves

"I've dabbled with surfing, but every time I ventured into it, I was beaten to a pulp," Cage reminisced about past attempts. "I'd find myself swallowed by the tide… climbing up the surf line while flipping somersaults, and I might've kicked the bucket," the Academy Award recipient mused. Becoming a father for the third time in 2022, Cage wonders if he's ready to risk life and limb on the waves.

Yet, he's not quite ready to hang up his board. "The plan," the American-Italian revealed, "is to retire, surf, savor red wine, and devour spaghetti."

Cage’s attempts to surf in the movie “The Surfer” were strenuous and potentially life-threatening. Every time he tried, he was subjected to severe punishment by the waves. In a near-death experience, he was caught in a treacherous rip tide, which almost drowned him. Weather conditions and even shark sightings made filming difficult on location. Despite these challenges, Cage showed dedication to portraying an authentic surfing experience.
