Basle Parliament firmly commits to active involvement

In a recent turn of events, the Basel city's political landscape has been shaken by the ongoing dispute between the Social Democratic Party (SP) and the SVP, centring around the MCH Group and its involvement in the Art Basel art fair in Qatar.

Michela Seggiani, a member of the SP and the Basel Government Councilor, has submitted a motion advocating for the government to acquire a majority of the canton's shares in the MCH Group. Seggiani's proposal, which is supported by Economy Director Kaspar Sutter (SP), aims to ensure the canton has more influence in the MCH Group's central strategic decisions.

However, the exact nature of the disagreement between the SP and the SVP regarding the MCH Group remains unclear. What is known is that a minority of the SVP faction, including faction speaker Pascal Messerli, voted for a Basta motion, though the specifics of this motion have not been disclosed.

Pascal Messerli has accused the Basel government of hypocrisy, suggesting they are silent on dictatorships despite presenting as 'rainbow-friendly' and tolerant. This criticism was prompted by the announcement of a new Art Basel art fair in Qatar, organized by the MCH Group.

Patrizia Bernasconi, the motioner, stated that the MCH Group's involvement is a 'political decision' that contradicts the ethical principles of the canton. Seggiani, on the other hand, has accused Basta of promoting the privatization of the exhibition company.

Despite the disagreement, the Grand Council voted against the Basta motion with a margin of 90 to 9. No new information was provided about Michela Seggiani's stance or actions regarding the Basta motion, nor about the AWP's position on the matter.

It's worth noting that the canton, despite having a 37.2% stake, has no influence on 'central strategic questions' in the MCH Group. The art fair in Qatar will proceed regardless of the canton's involvement.

Seggiani has also called for more say for the public hand in the MCH Group. As the debate continues, the future of the canton's involvement in the MCH Group and the Art Basel art fair in Qatar remains uncertain.
