Basketball team Boston Celtics and coach Joe Mazzulla reach agreement on multiple-year contract renewal.
Boston Celtics Extend Contract with Joe Mazzulla Amid Roster Adjustments
The Boston Celtics have secured the services of head coach Joe Mazzulla for the foreseeable future, as he has signed a multi-year contract extension. The exact terms of the agreement have not been disclosed.
In his three seasons with the Celtics, Mazzulla has delivered impressive results. With a record of 182-64, he boasts the highest winning percentage (.740) in NBA history for coaches with at least 100 games. During his tenure, the Celtics have won at least 57 games each season, including a franchise-record 64 wins in 2024 when they claimed their 18th NBA title. Mazzulla became the youngest NBA champion coach since Bill Russell in 1969.
This extension comes at a crucial time for the Celtics, as they prepare for a challenging season without star forward Jayson Tatum. The timing of the extension suggests the team's commitment to continuity and stability in coaching strategy as they navigate the adjustments needed without Tatum. Mazzulla's proven ability to lead the team to success, including adapting to roster changes, indicates he will play a central role in shaping Boston's player development, lineups, and overall future roster construction.
Last season, the Celtics won 61 games and placed second on the Eastern Conference playoff bracket before falling to the New York Knicks in the conference semifinal round. Following the defeat, the team engaged in a series of cost-cutting moves, trading away several stars from their 2024 championship run, including Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis.
Despite these changes, Mazzulla is one of two coaches to win at least one playoff series in each of the past three years, alongside former Knicks boss Tom Thibodeau. Mazzulla also made history by becoming the youngest coach to lift the O'Brien Trophy in over 50 years with the triumph.
Mazzulla took over as head coach on an interim basis after the ousting of Ime Udoka in 2022. He made the statement about his extension in a statement from the team. Mazzulla guided the Boston Celtics to their 18th NBA championship in 2024. He has been on the Boston Celtics' staff since 2019. His first tour as head coach of the Boston Celtics saw him place third in the Coach of the Year vote.
As the team prepares for the upcoming season, Mazzulla has expressed gratitude towards his faith, wife, children, ownership groups, mentor Brad Stevens, staff, and players. There is speculation that star Jaylen Brown could be next to go from the team. Notable additions over the summer include Chris Boucher, Luka Garza, Anfernee Simons, and first-round pick Hugo Gonzalez.
