Basketball player from high school files lawsuit against coach for alleged assault and harassment, claiming he yanked her hair during heated episode that left spectators stunned worldwide.
High School Basketball Coach Faces Lawsuit Over Alleged Abuse
James Zullo, the former head coach of the Northville High School girls' basketball team, is facing a lawsuit following a viral video showing him pulling a player's hair during a championship game.
The player in question is Hailey Monroe, who claims that Zullo's actions were part of a pattern of abusive, aggressive, and bullying behavior by the coach towards his young team members. The lawsuit, filed by Monroe's attorneys at Anderson, Moschetti & Taffany, PLLC, in the Supreme Court of New York, seeks an unspecified amount in damages for the injuries, expenses, and damages resulting from the March assault.
The incident took place on March 21, 2025, during the New York State Class D championship game at Hudson Valley Community College in Troy, NY. The now-infamous video captured Zullo yanking Hailey Monroe's hair at the end of the game, causing her head to snap back emotionally in front of teammates and spectators.
Zullo later claimed that the altercation was triggered when Hailey Monroe cursed at him after he instructed her to shake hands with the opposing team. However, the lawsuit alleges that the coach's actions were a result of the district's negligence, which contributed to Monroe's injuries.
The Northville Central School District has condemned Zullo's behavior, stating it was "completely unacceptable" and reaffirmed its commitment to uphold professionalism, sportsmanship, and respect in its programs. The district confirmed that Zullo would no longer coach within their programs.
Zullo, an 81-year-old coach with a Hall of Fame career spanning over 40 years, pleaded guilty in July 2025 to a harassment charge related to the hair-pulling incident. As part of the resolution, he was issued a one-year order of protection, barring him from any contact with Hailey Monroe.
This case highlights serious concerns about abuse and bullying in high school sports and the responsibilities of school districts to safeguard student-athletes. The lawsuit claims that the school district was aware of Zullo's tendency to erupt into aggressive episodes, specifically targeting the teenage girls on his team. It also alleges that Zullo has a history of physical and psychological abuse towards students, both inside and outside the school district.
The lawsuit was reported by the Daily Gazette, and the Northville Central School District and Jim Zullo have been formally served and have 20 days to respond to the complaint. Ahmya Tompkins, believed to be Zullo's niece, intervened between Monroe and the coach after the hair-pulling incident.
This case serves as a reminder for schools and coaches to prioritise the safety and well-being of their students, ensuring a positive and respectful environment for all.
