Basel's Fasnacht Carnival Kicks Off Under Sunny, Mild Weather This Week
Basel's famous Fasnacht carnival begins this Monday, just as a high-pressure system brings mostly dry and sunny weather to Switzerland. The 72-hour festival, packed with parades and traditions, will enjoy mild temperatures and clear skies for much of the week.
The carnival kicks off at 4:00 a.m. on Monday with the Morgestraich, marking the start of three days filled with Guggenmusik brass bands, satirical lantern displays, and rituals like the Totentanz. However, Monday itself will see more clouds and patchy light rain due to a weak disturbance from the north. Only isolated showers are expected, followed by a longer dry spell.
From Tuesday onwards, sunshine will dominate as a high-pressure system moves in from Spain. Temperatures will climb to between 13 and 16 degrees Celsius, making it ideal for outdoor celebrations. Wednesday will also stay bright and dry, with sunny skies lasting well into the evening—sunset will occur after 6:00 p.m. all week.
The weather will be perfect for carnival-goers, whether they're watching parades or enjoying a sunny lunch break. Even a trip to the mountains is on the cards, with clear conditions expected across much of Switzerland. Sunday will already bring sunny skies, setting the stage for the festivities ahead.
The Basler Fasnacht will run until 4:00 a.m. on Thursday, with warm temperatures and frequent sunshine enhancing the experience. After Monday's brief rain, dry and mild conditions will last through the week, offering ideal weather for the city's historic celebrations.
