Baltimore Orioles at Washington Nationals (-118, 8.5) – 6:45 p.m. ET

The only game tonight with two southpaw starters is the conclusion of the Beltway Series between the Orioles and Nationals. Washington is aiming for a sweep in this one, as they'll have MacKenzie Gore on the mound against Cade Povich.

The atmosphere surrounding the Orioles is abysmal at the moment, with fans on social media voicing strong criticisms and even targeting team architect Mike Elias. It's no secret that the Orioles had a clear weakness in their starting rotation going into the season, and opting not to invest much in that area seems to have left them in a precarious position.

Povich is a young pitcher with high expectations, but his early MLB results are less than satisfactory. In 98 innings across 20 starts, Povich has a 5.42 ERA with a 4.86 FIP. His performances this season include a 6.38 ERA, a 6.56 xERA, and a 5.21 FIP in 18.1 innings of work. Povich surrendered three home runs and walked five in his last start against the Reds, which marked his worst performance by Hard Hit% and Barrel%.

It looks like the Orioles are attempting to fine-tune Povich's mechanics. His arm angle and average vertical release point both increased during his last outing. The horizontal release point showed a significant difference compared to his previous three starts. It appears Povich is a mechanical mess at the moment, and the Orioles are scrambling to fix things. This, combined with the weight of poor pitching performances from his teammates, doesn't exactly inspire confidence.

Gore takes the mound for the Nationals, sporting a 3.41 ERA, 3.04 xERA, and a 2.20 FIP this season. Although the Orioles offense isn't without fault, their struggles against left-handed pitching merit mention – they currently sit dead last in wOBA and wRC+ against southpaws based on 227 plate appearances. Their .229 wOBA and 47 wRC+ come with a lack of power, as indicated by a sluggish .228 SLG and a K% above 25%.

Given Gore's early-season success (featuring two 13-strikeout games), taking on a struggling pitcher with an inconsistent delivery seems like a savvy move. However, I advise avoiding the Nationals bullpen as much as possible, as the full-game line of -118 and the 1st 5 line of -130 suggest the Gore vs. Povich angle is already factored into the odds. Taking a calculated risk, I'll go for the slightly juicier return and take the Nationals 1st 5 Run Line -0.5 at +105. Even without an early Nationals lead, I believe they can still do damage to a struggling Povich, particularly since Brandon Hyde might opt for a quick hook with a rested bullpen.
