Baseball player Willson Contreras from the Cardinals angrily snaps his bat in half following being struck by a pitch
St. Louis Cardinals' Willson Contreras Sustains Right Foot Contusion
Willson Contreras, the St. Louis Cardinals' leading home run hitter this season with 16, was hit by a pitch in the fourth inning of the team's game against the Colorado Rockies. The pitch, thrown by Kyle Freeland, had a speed of 82.9 mph.
Contreras, who also leads the team with 65 RBIs, stayed in the game until the start of the sixth inning, when he was replaced by Nolan Gorman at first base. Following the incident, Contreras expressed his frustration by slamming his bat against the ground, breaking it over his leg.
The Cardinals' manager, Oliver Marmol, did not make any comments about Contreras' injury postgame. However, it was confirmed that Contreras was hit in the right foot and left the game due to a contusion. X-rays on his foot came back clean, indicating no structural damage.
Despite the injury, Contreras is not expected to require a long-term absence. He is currently listed as day-to-day, with a bruised foot. Since the injury on August 12, 2025, Contreras has missed some games as a precaution and to recover. He was out of the lineup on several occasions due to the foot bruise and a separate stomach bug but was reportedly available off the bench in some games. He has been scheduled for re-evaluation to determine readiness to return fully to the lineup.
It's worth noting that Contreras has been hit by the most pitches (18) in the National League this season, trailing only Randy Arozarena and Ty France. The Cardinals will continue to monitor Contreras' progress and make decisions based on his recovery and readiness to play.
As of the latest updates through mid-August 2025, Contreras does not require a long-term absence due to his foot contusion but is being managed carefully with a short-term day-to-day approach.
