Holy Cross Baseball Star Sean Scanlon Overcomes Injury and Shines in 2025 Season

After a tough start to the 2024 season, Holy Cross baseball found itself struggling without key players Sean Scanlon and CJ Egrie due to injuries. Scanlon, a two-way standout, suffered a broken forearm after being hit by an errant pitch, leading to a season-ending surgery.

Despite the setback, Scanlon displayed a remarkable growth mindset, never letting his injury affect his teammates. From the dugout, he provided valuable insights and maintained a positive attitude, setting an example for his teammates.

Coach Ed Kahovec acknowledged Scanlon's leadership, asking him to take time at home to process his emotions but emphasizing the need for him to fully commit when he returned to the team. Scanlon responded with a commitment to return and be their captain and leader.

Scanlon's return, along with Egrie's, brought excitement to the Holy Cross baseball team. In the 2025 season, Scanlon is set to be the number two man in the pitching rotation. Even on days that he pitches, Coach Kahovec plans to have him hit.

In his first start of the 2025 season against Auburn, Scanlon had a 4-inning, 2-hit no decision outing, where he also had 5 plate appearances and an RBI sacrifice fly. His resiliency in his approach to training and recovery during the offseason has allowed him to come back as healthy as he has ever been.

Scanlon's impact on the team was evident in his performance during the regular season. He maintained a .461 on-base percentage and kept his ERA below 5.5. His leadership was also recognised off the field, with Scanlon being named the 2025 Patriot League Preseason Player of the Year.

One of Scanlon's most memorable moments came in a game against the 24th nationally ranked Kansas State Wildcats. In the top of the 10th inning, he hit a three-run home run, putting the Crusaders ahead 12-9, a lead they held onto in a 13-10 win.

Despite the struggles in the 2024 season, Holy Cross secured the #3 seed in the Patriot League Tournament. With Scanlon's return, the team looks poised for a strong showing in the upcoming tournaments. Scanlon's resilience and leadership will undoubtedly play a crucial role in their success.
