Baseball Player Ketel Marte of the Diamondbacks Expresses Sincere Remorse for Absences Following All-Star Break
In a press conference following a 3-1 loss to the Cleveland Guardians, Ketel Marte, second baseman for the Arizona Diamondbacks, addressed the media to clear up confusion surrounding his recent absence and the criticism he has faced.
Marte apologized publicly for missing three games after the 2025 All-Star break due to personal reasons. His home in Scottsdale, Arizona was burglarized during the break, leaving him "frustrated" and "in a bad spot." This situation led to his absence as he flew to the Dominican Republic before returning late to the team.
The Diamondbacks' manager, Torey Lovullo, expressed support for Marte's vulnerability in addressing the issue.
Despite the controversy, Marte remains a key player for the Diamondbacks. As of Tuesday, he is hitting .295/.395/.553 on the season with 23 home runs and three stolen bases. According to Baseball Reference's Wins Above Replacement metric, Marte is the second most productive position player on the Arizona Diamondbacks, with Geraldo Perdomo being the most productive.
Marte addressed the criticism he has faced for taking what some viewed as too many days off. He emphasized that these off days are part of a plan designed by the team's training staff to manage his health, especially given his history of injuries. Marte emphasized his intent is always to support the team's success and that the rest days are necessary for him to perform at his best.
The situation has caused some clubhouse tension and raised questions about Marte's reliability amid trade rumors for the offseason. Despite the Diamondbacks going 3-0 without Marte, the front office still elected to trade away Eugenio Suárez, Merrill Kelly, and Josh Naylor.
Marte expressed his desire to apologize to his teammates and everyone else for his actions. Other Arizona players were upset with Marte's decision to return to the Dominican Republic during a crucial time for the team. Marte is 31 years old.
