Mariano Rivera Suffers Injury During Yankees Old-Timers' Game

Mariano Rivera, the legendary closer and greatest in the history of the game, tore his Achilles tendon during the Yankees Old-Timers' game held at Yankee Stadium on Saturday. The injury occurred as Rivera, aged 55, was going after a flyball during the game.

The Old-Timers' Day game, which marked the first such event since 2019 for the Yankees, featured important figures from the 2000 title team, including Rivera, Roger Clemens, and manager Joe Torre.

The injury was initially reported by Roger Clemens on WFAN radio. Post-injury, Rivera was reported to be at the hospital, and surgery was planned shortly after, within about a week from the injury date. Rivera's agent, Fern Cuza, confirmed the operation would take place within a week after the injury.

The Yankees Old-Timers' game did not affect the final score of the Yankees' regular season game against the Houston Astros, which the Yankees won with a score of 5-4. Prior to the injury, Rivera had hit a single off Andy Pettitte during the preceding half inning.

Rivera spent his entire 19-year MLB career with the New York Yankees, earning 13 All-Star selections during his time with the team. He used his signature cutter to put up an ERA of 2.21 and record a record 652 saves over his career with the Yankees. In 2019, Rivera was unanimously elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame.

The Yankees Old-Timers' game was held to commemorate the Yankees' 2000 World Series championship. It is not yet clear when Rivera's surgery will take place, but it is expected to happen by mid-August 2025, shortly after the August 10 injury at the Old-Timers' Day game.

We wish Mariano Rivera a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing him back on the field.
