Baseball Coach from Wake Forest Issues Sincere Apology for Alleged Use of Homophobic Slur Caught on Camera
Head coach Tom Walter of Wake Forest's baseball team found himself in hot water last night after using a homophobic slur during a game against Tennessee, sparking a massive social media storm.
During Tennessee's seven-run fourth inning, cameras captured Walter seemingly mumbling a derogatory remark in the Wake Forest dugout. The video soon started circulating on social media platforms, causing an uproar.
Our website reached out to Wake Forest for a comment, and on Monday morning, they released statements from both Athletic Director John Currie and Tom Walter himself.
In his statement, Walter apologized for his outburst and acknowledged that the language he used didn't represent his values or the standards of the program. He expressed remorse to the University of Tennessee, Wake Forest University, and the conferences they represent.
Coach Walter stated, "I am very sorry for my outburst in frustration last night and I recognize the hurt and disappointment it has caused. I have seen the videos and while I do not remember the specific moment clearly, that language doesn’t reflect my values or the standards of this program."
Following the game and after being shown the video, Walter conversed with athletic director John Currie. It's worth noting that Walter was not asked about this during the postgame press conference.
Currie commented, “I am both surprised and deeply disappointed in our head baseball coach Tom Walter for his outburst during last night's baseball game. I feel badly for those most hurt by such words. I spoke with Coach Walter immediately after the game and again this morning to address the incident, which is completely out of character for him and does not meet the standards of Wake Forest Athletics, Wake Forest University or the Atlantic Coast Conference.”
Tennessee ended up securing the win and progressing to the Super Regionals to face Arkansas. Unfortunately, Wake Forest's season has come to an end, and Tom Walter will have to deal with criticism for his comments.
