The Whittier area high school sports scene is heating up as we approach the end of April, with several teams making strides in their respective leagues.

Baseball

Gahr High School's baseball team is currently riding high with an 11-11-2 overall record and a 4-1 league mark, placing them at the top of the league standings. They will host Mayfair High on Tuesday and visit La Mirada High on Thursday. Meanwhile, La Mirada High School's baseball team, currently 20-4 and 5-0 in the league, will face Firebaugh on Tuesday.

Norwalk High School's baseball team is close behind, with an 11-11-1 record overall and a 9-2 league record, placing them in second place, a game behind Warren. They will host Firebaugh on Tuesday.

Artesia High is holding their own with a 14-7-1 overall record and a 3-4-1 league record. They will visit John Glenn High on Tuesday with third place on the line.

Boys Tennis

In boys tennis, Valley Christian High School has a strong 11-4-1 record, a game behind Whittier Christian High. Norwalk High School has swept all 10 Mid-Cities League matches. La Mirada High School tied for second place in boys tennis.

The divisional brackets for boys tennis will be released on May 3. Five area teams are vying for a division championship.

Boys Volleyball

Whitney finished on top of the 605 League with a 12-0 mark. Cerritos High School shared the title in boys tennis with Oxford Academy. Gahr came in second place in the Gateway League with an 8-2 record. La Mirada was in third place in the Mid-Cities League at 4-3. Cerritos and V.C. finished in third and fourth places in boys volleyball with league marks of 8-4 and 6-6, respectively.

Softball

In softball, Cerritos High has not played since Apr. 17 and will host Whitney on Apr. 27. Glenn High needs to win its last four games and get help to make the playoffs. They will face Oxford Academy on Apr. 25, Pioneer on Apr. 27, Artesia on May 2, and Whitney on May 6.

Notable Achievements

Senior infielder Maverek Russell of La Mirada High tied the school record for career hits (117) in a game against West Ranch on Apr. 20. La Mirada High School's baseball team lost to Orange Lutheran High 13-3 in the championship game of the La Mirada Classic.
