Barnaul's 'Capital of the World' slogan stirs debate after football match stunt
A recent football match in St. Petersburg took an unexpected turn when a banner reading 'Barnaul—Capital of the World' appeared in the stands. The slogan, registered as a trademark earlier this year, has sparked debate in the Siberian city. Meanwhile, the game between Russia and Mali ended in a goalless draw. On March 31, Russia played Mali at St. Petersburg's Gazprom Arena. Despite a penalty opportunity, the home side failed to score, and the match finished 0–0. During the game, fans displayed a banner featuring the Russian flag alongside the phrase 'Barnaul—Capital of the World'. A photo of the banner was later shared by Mash Siberia.
The slogan itself was trademarked on January 21 by Olga Akimenko. When news of the registration broke in early 2026, social media users in Barnaul reacted with humour, turning it into memes. By April, opinions had shifted, with some residents supporting the ironic claim while others criticised it. Local officials, including Mayor Vyacheslav Frank, distanced themselves from the slogan and called on Yuri Zubov, head of the Federal Service for Intellectual Property, to review the case.
A legal challenge has since emerged. Yevgenia Orekhova's daughter is contesting the trademark, arguing that the phrase has long been an unofficial nickname for the city. The dispute will go before the Chamber for Patent Disputes on April 22. The trademark battle over 'Barnaul—Capital of the World' continues to draw attention, with a hearing set for later this month. The slogan's appearance at a high-profile football match has only added to its notoriety. Meanwhile, the city remains divided over whether to embrace the title or reject it.
