Barcelona's Vocal Groove Wins 'How Sweet The Sound' Competition

In a stirring performance at the Royal Albert Hall theatre in London on 20 October, Barcelona's very own Vocal Groove emerged victorious in the 'Small Choir' category of the 'How Sweet The Sound' competition. This prestigious event showcases gospel choirs from various countries and presents three categories.

Vocal Groove, a group of approximately twenty voices accompanied by the band Faith Collective, delivered a powerful rendition of Kirk Franklin's Hosanna. Their performance was marked by a special bond with the audience, thanks to the song's powerful nature and a well-prepared choreography.

Sammy, a soloist in Vocal Groove, encouraged the audience to participate, creating a very impactful moment. During the performance, Sammy also delivered a message, emphasizing that Vocal Groove was not competing for themselves, but in the name of Jesus.

David Suárez, the director of Vocal Groove, expressed that their connection with the audience during the performance was a significant factor in their win. He also stated that gospel music has expanded from churches to theatres and platforms worldwide, and that the message of gospel remains relevant.

The victory has strengthened the group's morale, with members feeling that it was not just for the moment but for something more. Vocal Groove intends to use their gift for gospel to share the music they love and to make it known as much as possible.

Gospel choirs in Barcelona have been growing in popularity, with active groups like the Barcelona Gospel Choir offering numerous weekly rehearsals and attracting around 65 members. Spain hosts choral festivals that include gospel music, such as the Catalonia International Easter Choir Festival and the Spring Choral Festival in Costa Brava, indicating an increasing openness to gospel music within broader choral events in Catalonia and nearby Barcelona.

Vocal Groove learned about the competition and submitted a video to participate. They were selected to compete in the grand final in London, along with three other groups from Italy, Poland, and the UK. The jury highlighted this message during their award presentation to Vocal Groove.

While gospel-specific choirs like the Barcelona Gospel Choir focus on community singing and musical growth, the region's overall choral culture is enriched by festivals and church-based music events, supporting the visibility and appreciation of gospel music in Barcelona.

As for the future, Vocal Groove is looking forward to sharing their love for gospel music with as many people as possible. The group's win in the 'How Sweet The Sound' competition is a testament to their passion and dedication, and a shining example of the vibrant gospel music scene in Barcelona.
