Robert Redford, the two-time Oscar winner and one of the most iconic figures in American cinema, passed away on Monday at the age of 89. The news was confirmed by his family, who shared that he was surrounded by those he loved when he died at his home in the US state of Utah.
Redford's career spanned over five decades, and he left an indelible mark on the film industry. One of his most memorable roles was as Hubbell Gardiner, the privileged writer, opposite Barbra Streisand's peace activist Katie Morosky, in the 1973 romantic film "The Way We Were."
The film, directed by Sydney Pollack, was a box office success and is often considered one of the greatest love stories in American cinema. Streisand's title song from the film also won an Oscar.
Following Redford's death, Streisand paid tribute to her former co-star, recalling their time working together on the set of "The Way We Were." She wrote on Instagram, "Every day on the set was exciting, intense, and pure joy. Despite our many differences, we constantly tried to learn more about each other, just like our characters in the film. I will always cherish the memories we made together."
Meryl Streep also expressed her condolences, noting that it was hard to believe Redford was 89 years old. Stephen King tweeted, "Goodbye, Robert Redford. You were a beacon of integrity and grace, a man who lived his life with passion and conviction. You will be deeply missed."
In a heartfelt post, Streisand recalled her time working with Redford and shared that "The Way We Were" was a special film for her. She wrote, "I'm so grateful to have had the opportunity to work with such a talented and inspiring actor. I will always be proud of our work together, and I know that 'The Way We Were' will continue to be cherished by audiences for generations to come."
Redford's legacy will undoubtedly live on through his iconic roles and the films he left behind. His passing marks the end of an era for Hollywood, and he will be deeply missed by his fans and colleagues alike.
