Golden Globes 2023: "Barbie" and "Barbenheimer" Make Waves
Golden Globe nominations dropped for 2023, and two films stood out like a sore thumb—you guessed it, "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer." With both movies setting records in theaters and now in the Golden Globe spotlight, it's no surprise that the neologism "Barbenheimer" caught everyone's attention!
The satirical backdrop of "Barbie" by US director Greta Gerwig boasts an impressive nine Golden Globe nominations, making it a force to be reckoned with. In the same league is "Oppenheimer," Christopher Nolan's drama about the atomic bomb inventor, with eight nominations.
Joining the favorite "Barbie" in the comedy category is the quirky "Poor Things" by director Giorgos Lanthimos and the heartwarming "May December." Meanwhile, the drama category rivals the comedy one, with powerhouses like "Anatomy of a Case" and "The Zone of Interest."
Breaking the language barrier, German actress Sandra Hüller got her first-ever Globe nomination for her role in "Anatomy of a Case." Hüller stars as a successful writer accused of murder and will compete against heavyweights in the "Best Actress in a Motion Picture Drama" category.
Hüller is not alone in her battle for the trophy, as she faces stiff competition from industry veterans like Annette Bening and Carey Mulligan and newcomers like Lily Gladstone and Cailee Spaeny. In a category stacked with ultra-talented individuals, Hüller's stage is set to shine.
Changing the tides, the Golden Globes organizers introduced a few changes. Instead of the usual five nominees per category, there are now six candidates in the running. A "Cinematic and Box Office Achievement" category was also introduced, featuring high-grossing films like "Barbie" and "John Wick: Chapter 4."
In addition, "Barbie" director Greta Gerwig and South Korean-born first-time director Celine Song made history in the suburban-dominated directing category. Many stars achieved milestones with their nominations, including former star Robert De Niro and eight-time winner Meryl Streep.
The opulent drama "Succession" remains the big favorite in the TV and streaming categories. Film productions will be given out on the night of January 7, 2024, while the television awards will air later in the year.
With a colorful array of films and talented individuals, the 2023 Golden Globes promises to be an unforgettable night in the entertainment industry.
