Bangladesh’s New Bholaganj Land Port Opens to Boost Trade with India
Bangladesh has officially opened its 24th land port, Bholaganj, in a move set to boost trade with northeastern India. The facility was inaugurated on December 18, 2025, in Sunamganj district, marking a major step in regional connectivity. Authorities expect the port to strengthen economic ties with Meghalaya and beyond.
Construction of the Bholaganj Land Port began in January 2024 and wrapped up by November the same year. The project cost Tk 175 crore and was declared a land port in 2019. Brigadier General M Sakhawat Hossain formally opened the facility at Companiganj upazila in Sylhet.
The port is designed to expand trade routes with India’s northeastern states, including Meghalaya, Tripura, Nagaland, and Assam. It will also serve as a key link for commerce with Bhutan. Officials have highlighted its potential to increase revenue and generate jobs in import-export sectors. Strategically located, the port aims to ease cross-border movement of goods. Its completion follows years of planning to improve infrastructure for smoother trade flows between Bangladesh and its neighbours.
The Bholaganj Land Port is now operational after a nearly two-year construction period. Its launch is expected to create new economic opportunities for local businesses and traders. The facility will play a vital role in strengthening regional trade networks.
