Bangladeshi U19 all-rounder delivers stunning performance with a scarcely seen double in the tri-series final victory against South Africa U19
In the recent tri-nation Youth One Day International (Youth ODI) series held in Zimbabwe, 18-year-old Rizan Hossan, the Bangladesh Under-19 all-rounder, showcased his seam bowling and batting skills, contributing significantly to his team's victory.
Rizan, who has been a part of the U19 team for over two years, has yet to make his senior professional debut. However, his performances in the Youth ODIs have been impressive, with 591 runs at an average of 31.10 and 24 wickets at an average of 18.12 across 24 matches. Only 27 cricketers have scored more than 500 runs and taken more than 20 wickets in Youth ODIs, and among these, only eight are seam-bowling all-rounders — Rizan being the only Bangladeshi in this category.
In the tri-series, Rizan scored 182 runs at an average of 30.33 and took 10 wickets at 12.30 in seven matches. His performance in the final was particularly noteworthy, as he scored 95 runs and took five wickets, helping Bangladesh U19 to win by 34 runs.
South Africa U19 chose to field first after winning the toss, reducing Bangladesh to 65-3. However, Rizan, batting at No.5, formed crucial partnerships, adding 117 runs with Kalam Siddiki and 63 runs with Md Abdullah. This set a competitive total of 269-5 from their 50 overs.
In response, South Africa began their run-chase well but collapsed to 164-7 due to Rizan's bowling. He took the last three wickets to fall, bowling out South Africa for 236, 34 runs short of the target.
Rizan's double of 95 runs and 5 wickets is only the second time this feat has been achieved in a Youth ODI, after Qasim Akram of Pakistan in 2022. His score of 95 is now the second-highest score made by a player who has also taken five wickets in a Youth ODI.
The tri-series included hosts Zimbabwe, and the final was played in Harare on August 10. The Bangladesh U19 coach has noted Rizan as a valuable all-rounder, adding versatility to the team. His two-year stint with the U19 team has raised hopes within Bangladesh cricket, as seam-bowling all-rounders are rare in Bangladesh.
