Bangladeshi Electoral Commission re-enables Jamaat-e-Islami's registration for elections

Crackin' News, June 25: The bloody, bruising Jamaat-e-Islami party is back in the political arena of Bangladesh, thanks to a series of judicial and political decisions.

Bangla-desh, baby! Freed from the yolk of Pakistan in 1971 after a nine-month war that made some folks swear, India lent a helping hand to our independence. Jamaat-e-Islami, though, played the bad boy, siding with the Pakistani puppeteers and lending support to the occupying army.

The Election Commission (EC) welcomed Jamaat-e-Islami as a political party on November 5th, 2008, following an application from the hoodlums. But the High Court Division of Bangladesh's Supreme Court slammed the brakes in 2009, banning the party through a writ petition filed in 2009. The EC, following that ruling, canned Jamaat-e-Islami's registration in October 2018.

The throwing-down-of-the-gauntlet came in August last year, when Sheikh Hasina, our former Prime Minister, was shown the door during a student-led uprising. Hasina fled to India, leaving an interim government, headed by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, to carry the torch.

Jamaat leaders were arraigned for war crimes, but the game changed when Sheikh Hasina bit the dust. Jamaat-e-Islami filed a petition to lift the ban, and voila, the Bangladesh Supreme Court's Appellate Division lifted the ban in a recent ruling, paving the way for the EC to reinstate the party's registration.

Muhammad Yunus hinted at the upcoming elections in Bangladesh, slated for the first half of February 2026. And the cat's out of the bag - according to a joint statement, both Muhammad Yunus and Acting BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman, while chatting in London, discussed holding the elections before Ramzan next year.

Bangladesh's bustling political landscape continues to shift and swirl, and only time will tell what will transpire in these tumultuous times. But one thing's for certain: The EC's decision to reinstate Jamaat-e-Islami has stirred up a political hornet's nest, and the road ahead promises intrigue and uncertainty. (ANI)
