Bangladeshi cricketer faces another ban just fortnight after being suspended due to an umpire argument.
Cricket Star Towhid Hridoy Faces Fresh Ban in Dhaka Premier League
Dig deeper into the drama surrounding Bangladesh cricketer Towhid Hridoy's latest ban!
Two weeks after a skirmish with umpires, Bangladesh international sensation Towhid Hridoy has been hit with another ban—this time for dissent during the Dhaka Premier League (DPL) match against Gazi Group Cricketers.
This new ban arose during a Super League battle on April 26, with Hridoy's team, Mohammedan Sporting Club, facing Gazi Group Cricketers. Hridoy was dismissed after attempting to drive a delivery from leggie Wasi Siddiquee, with the ball ultimately being caught off a deflection from the wicketkeeper. Despite the attending players claiming the ball had nicked Hridoy's bat on its way, the umpire concurred with the catch, and Hridoy showed his displeasure with a vague gesture before leaving the wicket.
It emerged later that Hridoy's dismissal earned him one demerit point for dissent, pushing his count to eight. In turn, he will miss a title-deciding clash against Abahani Ltd on April 29 and the first three games of the upcoming season.
A Timeline of Turmoil: Towhid Hridoy's Suspension Saga
Only two weeks prior, an on-field altercation with umpires led to Hridoy's initial one-match ban. Hridoy's media comments following the game ("Saikat is an international umpire, and we respect him. But we are also international players.")[3] earned him three more demerit points, bringing his season total to seven and leading to a two-match ban.
Amidst all the chaos, Cricket Committee of Dhaka Metropolis' (CCDM) technical committee member Enamul Haque Moni resigned due to doubts about the reduction of Hridoy's ban. Umpire Sharfuddoula Saikat then considered quitting domestic umpiring over the situation, while Moni's replacement, BCB director Nazmul Abedeen Fahim, announced Hridoy's suspension for the following match against Gazi Group.
A gathering of cricketers led by Tamim Iqbal met BCB President Faruque Ahmed on April 25 in search of clarity. The board ultimately stated that Hridoy's suspension had been deferred for a 12-month period, but this action was questioned by CCDM chairman Mohammad Salahuddin, who claimed no such action had been taken.
As of April 27, the confusion surrounding Hridoy's original ban remains unresolved.
