Bangladesh honors World Theatre Day 2026 with Dafoe's message and vibrant celebrations

World Theatre Day 2026 was celebrated in Bangladesh with a mix of events, discussions, and awards. The day featured a special message from American actor Willem Dafoe, along with local speeches, exhibitions, and performances organised by leading cultural groups in Dhaka and Chattogram. The main celebrations took place in Dhaka, jointly organised by the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, the Bangladesh Centre of the International Theatre Institute, and the Bangladesh Group Theatre Federation. The event included a procession, a discussion on the theme 'Theatre and a Culture of Peace' and an award ceremony.

In his official message, Willem Dafoe highlighted theatre's role in bringing people together, bridging cultures, and challenging societal norms. The local speech for Bangladesh was written by researcher and activist Mafidul Haque, translated into Bangla by Abdus Selim, and presented at the venue. Meanwhile, in Chattogram, Sketch Gallery-Nandan hosted a photography exhibition titled *'Alokchitre Monchalok Chattogram 1971-2026'*, curated by Sahriar Hannan. The event was held at the Zila Shilpakala Academy. Renowned dancer and assistant professor Tamanna Rahman delivered the World Theatre Day lecture, while theatre director Shishir Dutt received the World Theatre Day Award 2026 for his contributions.

The celebrations brought together artists, activists, and audiences across Bangladesh. Events in Dhaka and Chattogram showcased theatre's cultural impact, with speeches, exhibitions, and awards marking the occasion.
