Band Tilar's Vocals Unearth from Wardrobe
"No Booking Agency, No Management, No Label, No BS." Is why Clara Lucas, the singer of the DIY funk band Tilar, chooses her acoustic sound from an old wooden closet. That, and why oats could be the solution to heartbreak, is shown by the band Tilar in their new album "Unite & Heal."

"We've got no label, we do everything ourselves: no booking agency, no management, no label, no nonsense," says Clara Lucas, the singer of the Hamburg-based band Tilar. "For the vocal recordings, I set myself up in my old wooden wardrobe."
Their latest self-produced album "Unite & Heal" will be released on October 25. With their website, Clara Lucas talks about the production of their new album, covering topics such as the ideal wooden wardrobe for recordings, oats as heartbreak remedies, and Tilar's musical inspirations. This second album from the young funk band Tilar will create a lively, energetic atmosphere. The six tracks will get you dancing: with groovy funk music. Clara Lucas and pianist Joshua Milo are the core of the band, composing all the tracks for the seven-member band.
"Unite & Heal": Mission Statement
Band leaders Clara Lucas and Joshua Milo ended their relationship during the production of the album. They channeled parts of their separation into their music. The track of the same name "Unite & Heal" refers to the separation process. In this track, it's about reflecting on one's story, dealing with the other person, and, most importantly, taking care of oneself.
The title "Cereal" stands out thematically. But behind the simple title lies more: "What's a subject that isn't very touching? We thought, yeah, oats, because Joshua has a full oats obsession," says Clara Lucas. "Cereal" is the most complex track produced, featuring both rhythmic and orchestral elements."
The cover of "Unite & Heal" evokes reminders of space with its silver script and partially-cut earth, similar to the space-themed cover of their previous album "Over The Moon." The silver script, complemented by vibrant color accents, resembles a disco and emphasizes the danceable character of the album "Unite & Heal." Credit for the cover design goes to Ishaq Fahim.
Clear Voice, No Autotune
What defines the music of Tilar? Clara Lucas tells our website that people often assumed that her voice had been altered with Autotune - so good was her control over her clear voice. This is evident in the refrain of the song "More Than A Friend": Here, her voice merges with the unison of brass instruments and moves effortlessly through various octaves.
Artistic influences for Tilar are well-known artists like Cory Wong or even Michael Jackson, says Clara Lucas. Like Michael Jackson, the band uses Vocal Percussions in the background - the voice forms rhythms - as in the intro of the song "More Than A Friend." The album also features distinctive basslines with highrecognizability, a similarly clear and versatile voice, and a wide range of instruments, similar to those found in Michael Jackson's hit "Thriller." The inspiration for the used strings comes from the Belgian Metropole Orchestra, which has collaborated with numerous jazz and funk greats, including Cory Wong and Jakob Collier.

"Tilar, the self-produced DIY funk band from Hamburg, explores a variety of topics in their new album 'Unite & Heal,' including fashion-and-beauty, entertainment, and music, as seen in the discussion about Clara Lucas's preferred wooden wardrobe for recordings and the complex rhythmic and orchestral track 'Cereal' with its oat-inspired theme."
"The album cover, designed by Ishaq Fahim, reflects the danceable and energetic atmosphere of 'Unite & Heal' with its silver script and vibrant color accents resembling a disco, much like the space-themed cover of their previous album 'Over The Moon.'"
