Baltic Coast Rügen's spectacle upstaged by Neubrandenburg Outrigger Performance
In the heart of Germany, on the picturesque Sellin's South Beach on the island of Rügen, the 9th Rugia Hoe Festival took place over two exhilarating days. The event, a popular kiteboarding competition, attracted approximately 130 paddlers from various locations across the country.
The Open class was the main attraction, and it was Team Pollo from Neubrandenburg who emerged victorious. The team, led by captain Franz Polchow, had a commanding lead of nearly five minutes in the first stage, setting the tone for the rest of the competition. Joining them on the podium were "Oceans 6 SCBG" from Berlin, who claimed the third place.
The Mixed class was another hotly contested affair. "HKC Sixpack" from Hannover clinched the top spot, while "Manhattan Connection Frankfurt" and "1. OCC Kanu Connection Berlin" finished in second and third place respectively.
Team Pollo's victory was particularly noteworthy due to the inclusion of Martin Hollstein, an Olympic champion who won the gold medal in the double kayak in 2008. The team had intense duels with the Hamburg "Loveboat" in all three stages, making for thrilling spectator sports.
Organiser Mike Rolle acknowledged the challenges of hosting the event year after year. However, he expressed his gratitude to family, friends, sponsors, and the Ostseebad Sellin for their unwavering support. Rolle also shared a small dream of having foreign boats in the starting list for the 10th Rugia Hoe Festival.
Franz Polchow, Team Pollo's captain, made some changes to the team compared to last year's victory. Post-event, he expressed interest in exploring possibilities for the future, hinting at potential plans for the next Rugia Hoe Festival.
The paddlers used outrigger canoes, split into three stages. The weather during the third stage was more challenging compared to the first two, adding an extra layer of difficulty to the competition. Despite the adverse conditions, the participants, who were performance-oriented and competitive, gave their all, making for a memorable event.
