Balkhauser Weg closed indefinitely after major rockfall near Glüder campsite

A major rockfall has shut down Balkhauser Weg between Balkhauser Kotten and the Glüder campsite. The collapse happened on Sunday, March 15, forcing an indefinite closure. No injuries were reported in the incident.

The road had already faced repeated disruptions since July 14, 2021, due to landslides and heavy rain. Over 4 years and 8 months, sections were frequently blocked before this latest collapse.

Authorities have closed the route while specialists assess the slope's stability. Further rockfalls remain possible, according to initial evaluations. To prevent future risks, rock anchors and protective netting will be installed.

Drivers can use detours via Odenthaler Weg (L427) or Burger Landstraße (L407), though these add 5 to 10 kilometres to trips. A partial reopening, limited to single-lane traffic, may occur as early as Wednesday, March 18.

Nearby hiking trails are also under review for potential impacts. Meanwhile, Solingen's municipal utility company is inspecting a wooden utility pole and a power cable near the collapse site.

The road's future depends on stabilisation work and ongoing safety checks. If repairs proceed as planned, restricted access could resume mid-week. Until then, detours will remain the only option for travellers in the area.
