Balearic Islands: UME Deployed as Storm Gabrielle Floods Ibiza
The Balearic Islands regional government has requested the activation of the Military Emergencies Unit (UME) in Ibiza due to severe flooding, with Colonel Ricardo Cediel leading the operation. The island's capital, Ibiza town, has advised residents to avoid travel and stay indoors. At least two people have been seriously injured in the floods, with an 'extraordinary danger' red warning in effect.
The UME was deployed via helicopter from a mainland army base near Valencia. They join local firefighters who have been rescuing people trapped in cars and lifts. Police reinforcements and additional firefighters are being sent from Mallorca to assist in the relief efforts. The flooding, caused by Storm Gabrielle, has also affected eastern parts of Spain, including Catalonia and Valencia. Tourists arriving in Ibiza on ferries have had to wade through knee-deep water upon disembarkation. Military personnel have been deployed to combat the freak floods.
The situation in Ibiza remains critical, with severe flooding and at least two serious injuries reported. The UME, led by Colonel Ricardo Cediel, is working alongside local emergency services to combat the effects of Storm Gabrielle and ensure the safety of residents and tourists.
