Baden-Württemberg faces extreme cold with -15°C and icy roads ahead

Baden-Württemberg is bracing for a sharp drop in temperatures as winter tightens its grip. Heavy snow, ice, and freezing conditions are set to sweep across the region from Friday onwards. Authorities have issued warnings and reminded drivers of strict rules on snow chains and speed limits.

The German Weather Service (DWD) has forecast a bleak start to the weekend. Friday will bring overcast skies, snow or sleet showers, and strong winds, with 1 to 5 centimetres of snow expected in many areas. Thunder and lightning may also strike in isolated spots.

By Saturday evening, temperatures will plunge further, hitting -10°C on Sunday night. The coldest spell arrives early Monday, with lows of -15°C predicted. Overnight temperatures until then will hover between -1 and -7°C, increasing the risk of black ice on roads. In response, the ADAC in Württemberg has advised motorists to fit snow chains before heading into mountainous areas. A €20 fine applies to drivers who ignore the requirement on designated routes. However, chains do not replace winter tyres, and fitted vehicles must still obey a 50 km/h speed limit—even those with all-wheel drive. The ADAC also recommends practising chain installation at home in dry conditions to avoid delays in harsh weather. A DWD spokesperson warned that the coming days will bring some of the season’s most severe conditions. Residents and travellers are urged to prepare for difficult driving and potential disruptions.

The extreme cold and icy roads will likely create hazardous travel conditions across Baden-Württemberg. Drivers must comply with snow chain rules and reduced speed limits to avoid penalties. With temperatures set to remain dangerously low, further weather alerts may follow in the coming days.
