Bad Salzungen schedules pipe flushing to boost water quality in Barchfeld

The Bad Salzungen Water and Wastewater Association (WVS) will carry out scheduled pipe network flushing in Barchfeld. This measure is designed to clean drinking water lines and ensure long-term drinking water quality.

The work will take place from March 2 to 13, 2026, exclusively Monday through Friday. Operations will begin daily at 8:00 AM and continue until completion each day.

During the flushing process, temporary pressure fluctuations, brief supply interruptions, or discoloration of the drinking water (brownish tint) may occur. These effects pose no hygienic risk.

If water is drawn during the work, household installations and connected appliances—such as washing machines and dishwashers—may be affected.

If the water appears cloudy, residents are advised to let it run until it clears. After flushing is complete, household filters should be checked and cleaned if necessary.

To ensure smooth operations, the WVS requests that fire hydrants and their access points remain clear and unobstructed.

Background on the Measure

The Barchfeld group waterworks recently commissioned a modern treatment plant specifically designed to remove manganese. This ensures that the legal requirements of the Drinking Water Ordinance will continue to be reliably met in the future.

Manganese is a natural component of rock, particularly in deeper groundwater layers. When different drinking water wells are used, manganese-containing water can enter the supply system. While small amounts of manganese are harmless to humans, the WVS places great emphasis on providing clean, high-quality drinking water.

Over time, manganese deposits can accumulate in supply pipes. These may dissolve due to pressure fluctuations or increased water consumption, leading to discoloration.

The pipe network flushing specifically removes these deposits from the system, optimizing the effectiveness of the new treatment plant.

With this investment, the WVS is ensuring a sustainable and reliable drinking water supply for the residents of Barchfeld.
